Belgians are among the friendliest people in the world according to a ranking

The Belgian is often considered a funny, lively and (very) often good-natured person. A new ranking, established by the money transfer company Remitly and dedicated to the friendliest citizens in the world, proves it. Belgium is in tenth place. Our country received a final score of 32.5/40.

Why is Belgium considered the trendiest destination of the moment? The answer in images :

What place for Belgium?

So what are our country’s strengths? Remitly indicates that Belgium is a country where expatriates get their bearings quite quickly and easily. This is made possible in particular thanks to Brussels, which is the capital of Europe and therefore welcomes people from the four corners of the world and the old continent. Added to this is a more than warm welcome throughout the country: “friendly locals will help make the move even smoother“. Gastronomy also plays a role in the general good atmosphere of our country thanks to “delicious chocolates and beer“. Finally, Remitly highlights “beautiful architecture” of the country. If you want to discover Brussels from another angle, in a previous article we presented five buildings to contemplate to discover the capital differently.

Who are the friendliest citizens in the world?

The Belgians occupy tenth place in the ranking, but which country takes first place? The lucky winner is South Africa with a final score of 34.63/40. The reasons of this success ? Residents”known for being warm and welcoming, making it easy for travelers and visitors to feel at ease with them. It is not uncommon to be greeted by polite strangers when walking down the street, and South Africans are generally happy to socialize, striking up conversations and displaying good humor and making plenty of jokes.“. Another advantage: there are eleven official languages spoken in South Africa (English, Afrikaans and nine ethnic languages) which makes communication more interesting.

Note that Europe is very well represented since it occupies six places in the top 10. Greece is second, Croatia third, Sweden fifth, Germany eighth, Estonia ninth and finally Belgium tenth. To draw up this ranking, Remitly submitted 3,000 participants from 27 countries to the Big 5 personality test. The questions asked were based on the criterion of “pleasantness” of the test, each time with an index between 0 and 40. The higher the score was higher, the more the participants were judged as pleasant and friendly. The platform then calculated the average score of the inhabitants of each country in order to calculate an average “friendliness” score for each nation.
