This former police officer and United States Border Patrol agent had already been appointed acting director of ICE, from 2017 to 2021. Invited to speak during the Republican National Convention in July, Tom Homan had invited “the millions of illegal immigrants that Joe Biden has allowed into our country” has “start preparing [leurs] suitcases'”.

Donald Trump also nominated Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to the United Nations. This elected representative to the House of Representatives distinguished herself last year by leading the charge against university presidents deemed lax following anti-Semitic demonstrations or leaflets on their campus. The auditions she participated in led to resignations.

“Border Tsar”, participation in Project 2025…: who is Tom Homan, the new head of immigration appointed by Trump

The brand of “Project 2025”

These two appointments confirm Donald Trump’s desire to impose uncompromising personalities, representatives of the Republican hard line. According to the CNN news channel, Tom Homan even participated in Project 2025, coordinated by the Heritage Foundation, an ultra-conservative think tank founded in 1973. This 922-page document proposes an expansion of presidential power, the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, the elimination of the Ministry of Education, greater restrictions on abortion.

Until last week, Donald Trump claimed to not know or have read this document. But he does have an extensive vision of his power. Over the past weekend, Republican elected officials vying to become party leader in the Senate committed to accepting appointments within the administration, without a hearing, after the President ordered them to do so via social media.

Appointments to positions of responsibility in the administration and senior civil servants, including federal judges, are in principle subject to the approval of senators, following hearings. But an article of the American Constitution allows the president to make “provisional” appointments without them being approved by the Senate when the latter is not in session.

“Any Republican senator aiming to take the coveted leadership spot in the U.S. Senate must accept nominations” outside of parliamentary sessions, Donald Trump posted on the social network X. This injunction suggests that he intends to make the exception the norm.

The announcement on Saturday that Donald Trump won the election in Arizona, by 50.7% of the vote, against 47.7% for Kamala Harris, further cemented his undoubted victory. With this western state, he won all the swing states, these decisive pivotal states for the presidential election. He is the first Republican presidential candidate to win there since George W. Bush in 2004. Donald Trump won 6 points more than Joe Biden in 2020. Enough to add a little more to the humiliation of the outgoing President and its Vice-President.
