The American president-elect, Donald Trump, announced on Sunday, November 10, the return of Thomas Homan as head of the national agency in charge of border and immigration control (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE). Nicknamed “the Tsar of the borders” by the winner of the presidential election, this hard-liner had already held these positions during Donald Trump's first term, between 2017 and 2021.
“I have known Tom for a long time and there is no one better than him to monitor and control our borders”wrote the Republican billionaire on his Truth Social network. The new ICE director will be responsible for “all expulsions of illegal aliens to their country of origin”. The 78-year-old president-elect has pledged to launch, on the first day of his mandate, the largest operation to deport illegal migrants in the history of the United States. He also promised to relaunch a policy of family separation at the border. Under his first presidency, nearly 4,000 migrant children were separated from their parents after the latter had been placed in detention.
