UAn individual shot randomly on Saturday in a playground in the US state of Michigan, leaving at least nine injured, including a child, announced the local sheriff, according to whom the suspect is “surrounded”.

The shooting took place in Rochester Hills, a suburb of the city of Detroit, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. “The individual parked, got out of his vehicle, approached the playground, opened fire. He reloaded, opened fire, left. At this stage, it looks a lot like a random act,” the sheriff, Michel Bouchard, told the press. According to him, the shooter “has no connection with the victims”.

The shooting left at least nine injured, including an eight-year-old child, the sheriff said. A Glock pistol and several empty magazines were found on site.

“We have an individual, who we believe to be a suspect, surrounded in the area,” added Mr. Bouchard. Elite police response teams and armored vehicles were deployed to the scene.

With more guns than people, the United States has the highest gun death rate of any developed country. Shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far been powerless to stem, with many Americans remaining very attached to their guns.
