The African Development Bank is part of a consortium financing an ambitious project in Ghana.

Estimated to cost $137 million, the quay under construction will have a lifting capacity of 13,500 tonnes, as well as a 200-metre jetty, workshops, offices and heavy maritime equipment. This project, known as Shiprite, is expected to revolutionize the country’s port infrastructure.

An amount of 94 million dollars was raised thanks to Afreximbank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Trade and Development Bank of Eastern and Southern Africa, as well as the Petra Pension Schemes. This demonstrates a massive commitment to making this project a reality.

The works will be carried out by PMD Assetco, a Ghanaian company specializing in ship repairs, under a concession contract with the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority.

According to a press release from Afreximbank, “Project Shiprite” has obtained the full commitment of donors to finance the entire $137 million needed. This confirmation marks a crucial step for the development of this infrastructure.

Mike Salawou, Director of Infrastructure, Cities and Urban Development at the AfDB, indicated that this project is expected to create more than 500 new jobs, of which more than 15% will be reserved for young people and women. This represents a significant step forward for local employment and social inclusion in Ghana.
