“He fell like a pear”: a fight breaks out between several deputies in the Italian Parliament

Chaotic scene in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. A fight between parliamentarians broke out on Wednesday in the hemicycle of the Palazzo Montecitorio, in Rome, during a lively debate on “differentiated autonomy”, reports Milano Today.

This plan to grant more autonomy to the regions proposed by the government of Giorgia Meloni created strong tensions between deputies, particularly after Leonardo Donno, of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) party, wanted to give a tricolor flag to the minister for the Regional Affairs, Roberto Calderoli, in protest and as a symbol of national unity to protest this bill.

Following this gesture considered provocative, several deputies from the majority intervened, including the deputy of the League (formerly Northern League) Igor Iezzi, who allegedly dealt several blows to Leonardo Donno, who was subsequently evacuated in a wheelchair for treatment. . “A League deputy punched him twice in the head,” denounces parliamentarian Marco Grimaldi.

On the video, we see the far-right MP Igor Iezzi, dressed in a beige jacket, attempting to punch Leonardo Donno several times, visibly without managing to touch him, before the latter collapses to the ground.

“I received a punch from MP Iezzi,” said the M5S MP, quoted by il Giornale. “Among the various blows, I also received one to the sternum and I collapsed because I couldn’t breathe. I was scared,” he added.

“I didn’t touch him”

“I tried to hit him, but I didn’t touch him,” assures Igor Iezzi. “Donno tried to attack Calderoli and I reacted. I walked away and he fell like a pear,” continues the far-right MP, who seems to half regret his gesture. “What if I regret?” It’s a reaction that is not justified, but I was provoked,” he says.

In the fight which broke out in the Roman hemicycle, a parliamentary assistant was also hit in the face and stomach, his colleagues report. He had to be carried by them to the infirmary to be treated.

“The attack that occurred in the Chamber against Leonardo Donno is a very serious and shameful fact. Our MP simply wanted to give an Italian flag to Minister Calderoli, when he was physically attacked by parliamentarians from the majority, including the member of the Northern League, Iezzi, who punched and punched him. made him fall to the ground,” denounced the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) in a press release.

“We demand serious and immediate measures against this act of real squadron perpetrated within the institutions which tarnishes our democracy,” concludes the Movement.

“Contrary to what was reported by certain media and by certain representatives of the Movimento 5 Stelle, it was the deputy Donno of the M5S who attacked Minister Calderoli”, defends the League in a note, stressing that the brawl is “ the consequence of the very provocative behavior of Deputy Donno.” “The video shows how the events really happened,” concludes the far-right party.
