In his congratulations, Justin Trudeau told Mr. Trump that his father, Pierre Eliott Trudeau, also won an election (in 1980) after losing one (in 1979), as was the case for Donald Trump.
According to a liberal source, the former – and future – American president would have greatly appreciated this historical parallel. Mr. Trump even called Pierre Trudeau a “terrific guy.”
Mr. Trump reportedly told Justin Trudeau that he had fond memories of working with the Trudeau government during his years in power, from 2017 to 2021.
The two leaders also discussed the need to work on the illegal trade in fentanyl, this opioid which is wreaking havoc on both sides of the border.
