Moscow says it repelled Ukrainian drone attack on Caucasus airfield

Russia claimed to have repelled a Ukrainian drone attack this Saturday targeting a military airfield in North Ossetia, the first against this region located a thousand kilometers from the Ukrainian border. A military intelligence Source in kyiv confirmed that Ukraine was behind it.

“Three aerial drones were shot down by anti-aircraft defense systems in Mozdok”, a large city in North Ossetia, in the Russian Caucasus, regional leader Sergei Menyailo said on Telegram. “According to initial information, the drones came from the Ukrainian side,” he said.

This is the first drone attack targeting North Ossetia, located around 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border, since the start of the Russian operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The attack “targeted an airfield military” local, according to Sergei Meniaïlo, who reported “small damage and fires”. The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that it had repelled a drone attack in North Ossetia, without further details.

In kyiv, a military intelligence Source confirmed that “today’s attack on the airfield in North Ossetia is a special operation of the GUR”, the Ukrainian military intelligence department. This structure within the Ukrainian Defense Ministry is renowned for its daring operations deep into Russia and the Ukrainian territories it controls.
