  • Budapest hosts European Political Community and EU summits in football stadium on Thursday and Friday

  • A choice that is not insignificant: Viktor Orban
places this sport at the heart of its political strategy

  • These summits are taking place in a particular context: just after the American elections and while Viktor Orban is looking towards Moscow

  • Leaders considered boycotting them. A “false good idea”, says Charles Michel

It sits in the Zuglo district. In Budapest, the Ferenc Puskas stadium, which can accommodate up to 70,000 spectators, was built in 2017 for nearly 600 million euros in tribute to the legendary Hungarian striker of the 1950s-1960s. But on Thursday, there probably won’t be a shadow of a crampon on the pitch. The restless Hungarian sovereignist leader Viktor Orban chose to host the 5th summit of the European Political Community (EPC), bringing together nearly 49 European heads of state and government. Including Switzerland.

A new provocation of which he has the secret, while Budapest is not lacking in sumptuous buildings which would have been more suitable for such a meeting? Last year, the setting for the CPE was Blenheim Palace, half an hour from Oxford. A castle listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, where Winston Churchill was born.
