Geneva – The United Nations Human Rights Council completed the work of its 57th ordinary session on Friday, which was held since September 9 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, under the presidency of Morocco.

At the end of this session, the Council adopted 37 resolutions – ten of which were voted on – and one decision. On the last day of the session, Ambassador Omar Zniber, Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva and current President of the Human Rights Council, appointed four mandate holders and four members of his Advisory committee.

The resolutions adopted relate to several themes, including the situation of migrants at international borders; the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change; “Biodiversity and human rights”; the right to development; the “Promotion, protection and exercise of human rights on the Internet”; the transformation of the international financial architecture and a global solution to the external debt problem; accessibility for disabled people, the elderly and other people in vulnerable situations; and the fight against racism and racial discrimination; intensifying efforts to prevent and eliminate family violence.

Other resolutions concern human rights and the social reintegration of people released or subjected to non-custodial measures; “the role of young people in promoting peaceful societies and creating an environment conducive to the enjoyment of human rights by all”; the effects of artificial intelligence systems on good governance; as well as the monitoring of mercenaries and mercenary-related activities, online and offline, and on the execution of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and its four pillars.

Regarding the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the Council approved during this session the documents resulting from the review of fourteen countries: New Zealand, Afghanistan, Chile, Viet Nam, Uruguay, Yemen, Vanuatu, Macedonia North, Comoros, Slovakia, Eritrea, Cyprus, Dominican Republic and Cambodia.

Before closing its session, the Council adopted ad referendum the draft report of this fifty-seventh session.
