In the European Parliament, “Bella ciao” sung by these MEPs after Viktor Orbán’s speech

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT – Fighting ideas in song. The end of Viktor Orbán’s speech to the European Parliament on October 9 ended in song. Left-wing MEPs sang the anti-fascist song Hello beautiful at the end of his speech, as you can see in the video at the top of the article, before being reframed by the President of Parliament Roberta Metsola.

His intervention in the hemicycle promised to be tense. If Viktor Orbán is supported by the European nationalist rights, the other groups are clearly hostile to him. Before his speech, left-wing deputies displayed their opposition.

“No money for corruption”could we read on a sign brandished by the radical left, in reference to European funds intended for Hungary, and partially frozen by Brussels for reasons of attacks on the rule of law in the country. The Social Democrats, for their part, held up signs “Democrats versus autocrats”.

In front of the press in , Viktor Orbán stormed on Tuesday October 8 against the “European elites of the left and center”displaying his closeness to Donald Trump or pleading for a “new strategy” about Ukraine by communicating “directly” with Moscow.

Muzzling of oppositions

Since his return to the head of the country in 2010, Viktor Orbán has strengthened his grip on power while restricting the rights of oppositions, clashing several times with Brussels on questions of migration and the rule of law.

In July, the European Commission found in a report that Hungary did not meet EU democratic standards, notably on corruption, political financing, conflicts of interest and media independence.

Latest episode of the conflict between Budapest and Brussels, the Commission announced on Thursday that it would refer the matter to European justice regarding the Hungarian law on “sovereignty”which NGOs consider as a new offensive to muzzle counter-powers.
