Like every year, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands paid tribute to the Dutch soldiers who fell for their country. This May 4, the royal couple laid a wreath at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam.

The tribute of the Dutch sovereigns at the foot of the National Monument
On May 4 and 5, various events related to national liberation and national heroes take place in the Netherlands. This Sunday, King Willem-Alexander will attend a concert organized as part of the commemorations. This Saturday, May 4, like every year on the same date, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid tribute to the soldiers and civilians who fell for their homeland.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima laid a wreath at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. Several ministers were present at the ceremony. Two minutes of silence were observed across the Netherlands, as well as by the thousands of people in Dam Square, to commemorate civilians and soldiers who have lost their lives in war situations since the outbreak of the Second World War.
Other ceremonies are organized across the country. Princess Margriet, her husband Pieter van Vollenhoven and one of their sons, Prince Pieter-Christiaan of Orange-Nassau, notably participated in a ceremony of contemplation at the Grebbeberg military cemetery in Rhenen.
