A grandmother mixes water and white wine while preparing her grandson’s bottle: the infant has an alcoholic coma

the essential
A grandmother made a mistake when filling her grandson’s bottle. She replaced the water with white wine, causing the baby to go into an alcoholic coma. Admitted to intensive care, the infant would be between life and death.

A costly error of attention. Monday May 4 in Italy, a 4-month-old baby suffered an alcoholic coma. Her grandmother confused water and white wine when filling her baby bottle, reports the Italian media La Repubblica. After noticing her mistake, the grandmother immediately took the toddler to the Perrino Hospital in Brindisi, where the latter was taken care of by the pediatric department. The baby had fallen into an alcoholic coma due to his young age.

After gastric lavage, the baby was intubated and transferred to the Giovanni XXIII Children’s Hospital in Bari, where he is currently in the intensive care unit. Although his condition has stabilized and doctors report a slight improvement, the possibility of danger to life has not been ruled out for the moment.

An open investigation

An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of this accident. According to the Italian media, the grandmother in question would have diluted the powdered milk with wine contained in an opaque bottle, which partly explains her error. She then allegedly handed the bottle to the infant who drank part of it before refusing to continue. Enough, however, to quickly deteriorate his state of health. The investigation continues.
