A young pregnant mother, who was home alone when her water broke three months early, reportedly gave birth in a mix of snow and rain with the help of Colorado police officers, after trying to get help from neighbors.
“We believe the woman went into labor while she was home alone, but her phone had died so she attempted to go to a neighbor’s house to call 911,” the Department of Public Safety said Friday. Greeley police on Facebook, according to the “New York Post.”
On April 18, around 3:30 a.m., four Greeley police officers were called to a private residence for a woman who was screaming outside the front door in the early morning.
But upon arriving at the scene, they quickly realized that it was in fact a young 24-year-old pregnant woman in pain, actively giving birth outside in temperatures around freezing, hearing the cries of the firstborn.
The young mother, Tiffany Leonard, was not due to see her three triplets before July 25, the baby’s father, Eric Mayeda, told McClatchy News.
The four police officers would have quickly pitched in to help the mother while waiting for the paramedics to arrive on the scene, providing themselves with towels and bread clips borrowed from neighbors to tie and cut the babies’ umbilical cords under rain and snow.
“An officer took the first little boy back to his patrol car where it was much warmer. Once inside, the baby stopped breathing, prompting the officer to perform chest compressions to give the baby a chance of survival,” the Facebook post read.
The first two babies, delivered on the entrance mat, were rushed to a hospital, while the third was reportedly delivered from the comfort of a hospital bed, after the mother was transported there from ’emergency.
The three newborns, Burt Isao, Kikutaro Alan and Billy Bob, as well as the mother are doing wonderfully, the police rejoiced, reporting a “strong heartbeat” for the three premature babies.
“We expect no less from our officers than excellence in our community every day […] Despite these high expectations, I was amazed at the teamwork, ingenuity and care our officers provided to this mother and her three new babies,” congratulated the chief, Adam Turk, on Facebook.
