Thursday January 2, shortly after 1 p.m., Matthias, 23, was attacked by a group of hooded young people who beat him with a hammer and probably a knife. A particularly violent deadly attack.

An extremely violent attack. Thursday January 2, shortly after 1 p.m., an argument broke out between an individual and a group of four men “hooded, hoods on their heads” in front of the station, in Maine-et-. Prosecutor Eric Bouillard explains that the altercation continued in the station hall, where at least two individuals hit the victim with hammers and a sharp object, “probably a knife”.

A scene of such violence that, according to our colleagues from “Ouest-”, several shocked witnesses to the scene had to be taken care of by the firefighters. The others were filmed running away while the victim was left for dead by his attackers. When help arrived, the man, who had several wounds, including one on his neck, was inanimate and the firefighters were unable to do anything to bring him back to life. Matthias was 23 years old.

The attackers still on the run

An investigation was opened, but Eric Bouillard indicated yesterday that it was “too early” to establish the circumstances of this tragedy. Especially since the four attackers are still on the run this Saturday and have therefore not yet been able to be heard by investigators. The only hypothesis put forward at the moment is that of a possible dispute against a backdrop of drug trafficking. The victim’s relatives described him, to our colleagues, as a “calm and cheerful” young man.

“He had a difficult life path, but he tried to get through it. He was in his efforts, he was fighting. He believed, he had hope. We made CVs together, we helped each other,” testified a friend of Matthias. “He was a calm, happy person, but above all not in trouble. It surprised me when I found out it was him. He was always jovial and protective,” added another acquaintance, while a station employee confirmed: “he was always smiling, kind. He often defended me when customers attacked me.”

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), Christophe Béchu, the mayor of Angers, expressed his “fright”. “We will not give in to violence. Our City must be safe, everyone must be able to live there in safety. Justice must be as firm as possible with the murderers,” he insists.
