A year ago, the Christmas period was marked by a terrible traffic accident in Yvelines. On the D 307, near Bailly, the same family (a couple, their daughter and her partner) was decimated, after being hit head-on by a young 22-year-old motorist.
This year, accidents and deaths are down on the department’s roads. This is what the prefecture indicates on the sidelines of the Yvelines road safety steering committee which was held on December 18. A meeting which made it possible to draw up the annual report and discuss the main lines of the action planned for the coming year.
With 26 deaths recorded between January and November (230 in Île-de-France) compared to 35 on average in previous years, the drop, of around 26%, is intended to be “notable”, especially in the second half of the year. In detail, nine of these 26 victims were riding a motorcycle, while twelve were in a car, like these two people from the same family killed in September in Épône. Finally, five of them were pedestrians.
The main causes of these fatal accidents are, in order, speed (41%), alcohol (26%) and discomfort (18%). Note that 77% of the tragedies occurred outside urban areas, hence, according to the prefecture, “the need for increased vigilance on rural roads”.
In its action plan for 2025, the Yvelines road safety steering committee says it wants to focus on professional road risk, risky driving “by targeting speed and telephone use, particularly among young people under 25 years old” and on the sharing the road to protect vulnerable users, particularly cyclists, pedestrians and motorized two-wheelers.”
