IImpossible to escape Elon Musk. The richest man in the world invites himself everywhere. On the roads with Tesla, in space with SpaceX, in our brains with Neuralink chips, and soon in the White House, at the head of the Department of Government Effectiveness. Musk joined a Trump-Zelensky phone call, lent his support to the German far right – to the point of being accused of interference – and just clashed with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

This sprawling influence, multiplied by the resonance chamber of its X network (formerly Twitter), is not unanimous in . According to a Cluster17 survey* for The Pointonly 21% of French people have a good opinion of the serial entrepreneur, which 44% of respondents position on the extreme right. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk is the most popular among right-wing voters, who share his “liberal, techno-solutionist and neonationalist vision”, analyzes Stéphane Fournier, research director at Cluster17.

Stratospheric notoriety

In 2025, only Martians do not know the boss of SpaceX. Nine out of ten French people know “very well who Elon Musk is”, with a score that exceeds 90% across the entire political spectrum, from Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s voters to those of Éric Zemmour.

We did not expect that a business leader, even of his size, would be so well known by the French population,” notes Stéphane Fournier, with a notoriety “close to what we measure for major international leaders , great sportsmen or artists.”

He claims to be a centrist with a libertarian tendency. But 80% of French people judge his positioning to be either right-wing (36%) or far-right (44%), with 15% who “don’t know”. Elon Musk is above all a political Rorschach test: an immense majority of voters from the New Popular Front (between 74 and 95%) but also from Renaissance (83%) consider him far-right; on the RN side, 50% identify him as a right-wing man, a score which rises to 79% among Eric Zemmour’s supporters.

Marked popularity on the right

Nearly half of respondents (48%) have a poor opinion of Musk. Only one in five French people (21%) appreciate it while a small third (31%) remain neutral. Elon Musk recorded his best scores among LR voters (30% favorable opinions), RN (38%) and Reconquest (73%). According to the study director of Cluster17, this plebiscite among supporters of Éric Zemmour can be explained in particular because there are “more politicized, even committed, citizens who are part of the new liberal identity movement which crosses part of the West.”

According to Stéphane Fournier, “it is likely that the image of a successful business leader focused on innovation will appeal to a right-wing, male and wealthy audience.” We also note a gap of 7 points between good opinions among men (24%) and women (17%). The level of education also plays a role: almost three quarters of “Bac + 5 and above” reject Elon Musk.

Convergence of Trumpism and Muskism

Logically, the survey yields similar figures on its participation in the Trump administration to downsize the mammoth of the American federal state: 27% of French people believe that it is a “good thing” and 49%, a “bad” one. . The “traditionalists” and the “identitarians” applaud with both hands while the “multiculturalists” and the “social democrats” are up in arms against this mixture of genres which risks turning into a conflict of interests.

Answer

For Stéphane Fournier, “there is strong support among part of the French right electorate for the Muskian liberal “transgression”, which overvalues masculinism, technology, liberalism and anti-ecology in a form of provocation and reaction to a so-called woke system.” A “woke virus” that Elon Musk promised to “destroy” by all means.
