Marnow Murders is a German television series and between us, we don’t blame you if you don’t know it: it is mainly known on a national scale since it has not benefited from localization. It nonetheless remains one of the country’s biggest successes.
An acclaimed thriller
In 2021, the series Marnow Murders created a general surprise in Germany: it tells the story of two investigators, Lona Mendt and Frank Elling, played by Petra Shmidt-Schaller and Sacha Alexander Gersak, who were leading an investigation into a serial killer in the a priori random victims…. before realizing that they were all surprisingly related. This critically acclaimed crime thriller has also had enormous commercial success: we are still talking about 19 million viewers for season 1!
The two actors on the bill even received the German Television Prize in 2021 for their role and it is therefore no surprise that a season 2 was quickly ordered. Three years later, in 2024, the latter enjoyed similar success and was widely talked about in Germany.
A local success
This season 2 tackles a slightly different concept: following the investigation of the two main characters, they find themselves involved in the dark stories of human trafficking, and above all the absolute priority of protecting a young witness. The feedback for this season 2 is also rave and, moreover, it has just ended on German television.
The only downside: Marnow Murders is absolutely not broadcast in France and, moreover, no VF is to be declared either. The result is a series whose success is limited to the borders of the country in question, despite all the good press it may have generated. It remains to be seen whether the project, which seems a priori to have come to an end with this season 2, could interest neighboring countries or even be exported across the Atlantic. Traditional VOD platforms could be the ideal springboard, since they have already enabled the emergence of successful German series like Dark, 1899, The Signal and Barbarians.
