Does Season 5 of Yellowstone really announce the end of the series?

After the deadly events of the new episodes of Yellowstonewill a sequel to season 5 be possible? The producer and director responds. SPOILER ALERT.

Between the opposing points of view of its characters and its moral ambiguity, Yellowstone drew as much from the classic Dallas soap opera as from the intractable writing of Game of Thrones. The long-awaited second part of season 5 only confirmed this direction, although it was a little forced by the departure of Kevin Costnertoo busy with the realization of his saga Horizon.

Taylor Sheridan's series therefore had to make a terrible decision, by killing patriarch John Dutton. What appeared to be a suicide turned out to be a disguised murder, ordered by his son Jaime (Wes Bentley) and his girlfriend Sarah (Dawn Olivieri). As the final battle for the Dutton ranch turns into the ultimate revenge, episode 11 concluded with a shock ending, killing Sarah by surprise.

On the other hand, John's two other children, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) are in search of the truth, while trying to keep their family's land, some of which they will undoubtedly have to sell. . Clearly, the last episodes of season 5 of Yellowstone will not spare anyone, but is this really the planned end of the series?

“Like a Monday”

Yellowstone in the sauce (ranch)?

At the microphone of Variety, producer Christina Voros (also director of numerous episodes, including the 11th of season 5) returned to the future potential of the series flagship of Paramount, since declined into many spin-offs. As a reminder, if the departure of Kevin Costner seemed to hasten the end of Yellowstone, Variety had announced that Kelly Reilley and Cole Hauser (the interpreter of Rip, Beth's husband) were in negotiations for a possible season 6.

“I think the final episodes lead to the end of an era. It's impossible to talk about it in detail without mentioning future elements. But I think Taylor [Sheridan] managed to create an ending that feels both shocking and inevitable – and I'm not sure how he did it, but it's brilliant. You have to get to the end of the story to fully understand everything that happened before. »

Given Christina Voros' comments, one might think that Yellowstone is heading more than ever towards tragedy to avoid putting a part back in the machine. In any case, the producer confirmed that the idea was to put the characters in a form of impassewhich will push them to a final difficult choice.

“All this immensity bathed in light is our kingdom”

“You can expect to see characters who feel like they don't have many options, and who are fighting for a way out. What Episode 511 starts with is everyone feeling like they're at an impasse. Jamie has lost his partner, and he is about to lose his place in politics.

Beth and Kayce don't have a plan to fix it. The best they could hope for, as Beth told Rainwater [Gil Birmingham, ndlr]is to keep a portion of the ranch, and sell part of it. But as John's instructions have always prohibited the sale of even a single plot, any alternative would be considered a failure, which would flout the father's legacy, and which would let down entire generations of the Dutton family, who are are beaten to protect this place. »

Christina Voros does not validate or invalidate the possibility of a season 6 of Yellowstonebut if this sequel were to see the light of day, it is clear that the series would take a new direction. But to be sure, we will have to wait for the last episodes of season 5B, available in on Paramount+.
