Rated 4.3 out of 5 by AlloCiné internet users, “Shogun” has been renewed. But after season 2, what future for the series? The creators have the answer.

A few weeks ago, we learned of the renewal of Shôgun for several additional seasons. The adaptation of James Clavell’s novel had been designed as a one-season mini-series, but the success of the series ultimately convinced the FX channel to extend the broadcast of the program.

The entire book having been adapted, the next seasons of Shôgun will therefore have to imagine an original plot which will remain faithful to the work of the British novelist. A challenge that the two creators of the series, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, are preparing to take on.

Seasons 2 and 3 are in development

The two screenwriters (husbands in the city) spoke to our colleagues about Hollywood Reporter the future of the program, evoking in particular “a darker chapter” for season 2 which will therefore be a direct extension of the first season.

“There is a lot of chaos, but creative chaos, and we are currently working on ideas before seeing what we will keep” explained Rachel Kondo during this interview. “It’s both exciting and very stressful, because obviously we’re now moving into uncharted territory. We don’t have a battle plan yet, but we already have a story in mind.”

The next seasons of Shôgun will not betray James Clavell’s novel

Two additional seasons have been ordered, but the imagined story will not go beyond season 3 as Justin Marks confirmed: “Season 3 will be a true ending. We know where the story begins, how it ends, and who the protagonists are. We are currently working on Season 2 to make sure we can connect those dots. Season 2 will be like most sequels a darker chapter.”

Also interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter, the main actor of Shôgun Hiroyuki Sanada (also credited as producer) was also delighted with the extension of the series: “We no longer have James Clavell’s novel at our disposal, but we have learned a lot from his mind and his taste for storytelling. His DNA is now mixed with ours, I believe.”

The first season of Shogun can now be found exclusively on Disney+.
