The idea of being with you never leaves the top of the top of the most viewed films of the moment on Prime Video. Inspired by Robinne Lee’s best-seller, this rose-tinted romance stars Anne Hathaway as Solène, a 40-year-old single mother, whose life is turned upside down when she meets Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the singer of the sexiest boy band on the planet, at the Coachella music festival. Their 16 years difference will not prevent them from living a beautiful love story. But the young artist’s superstar status soon poses inevitable challenges to their relationship.

The idea of being with you (Prime Video): the ending of the film is more optimistic than that of the book

If The idea of being with you remains faithful to Robinne Lee’s story, director Michael Showalter, however, decided to take a little more freedom with his ending. Unlike the book, where the relationship between Solène and Hayes ends for good, the feature film ends on a more optimistic note for the couple. In the film, tired of the media attention, the mother decides to break up with the young artist, who shows up at her door. After telling him “I love you”, the singer of the group August Moon then asks Solène to think about what their relationship would be like in five years. Several years after their separation, Hayes shows up at Solène’s gallery and the lovers end up in tears, which suggests that their relationship may have a future after all.

The idea of being with you : “There is hope for these two characters”

In an interview given to the American site TVLine, director Michael Showalter explained that he wanted “give the audience a sense of hope”. “There are so many films in this genre. I think you just want to feel like there’s some possibility for both leads. It’s not a definitive ending and so there is hope for these two characters at the end of this film. If the American filmmaker is aware that this major change may disappoint some fans of the book, he nevertheless hopes that the feature film “will introduce this story and characters to new fans”. For author Robinne Lee, who was not involved in the production process, this change is far from shocking. “Hollywood has a way of wanting to embellish things […] and I knew that was probably going to happen if I gave this book to someone to adapt.”she commented to TVLine.
