This new road drama occurred at 12:20 p.m. in Païta.

Suddenly tired, the driver of a 4×4 traveling on the RT1 between Noumea and Tontouta fell asleep. She was then at the level of the Tamoa and moved to the left lane. Opposite came a light rental vehicle occupied by a couple of New Zealand tourists.

The 54-year-old passenger died in the accident. Her husband, meanwhile, was evacuated to the Médipôle thanks to the Smur helicopter. His days are not in danger. For her part, the driver of the 4×4, who was alone on board, is unharmed.

The violence of the impact led the emergency services to block traffic. A diversion was put in place while the victims were taken care of and the vehicles were evacuated. Traffic was restored around 2 p.m.

This new accident now brings to 24 the number of deaths on the roads of New Caledonia since the beginning of the year 2023.

The investigation to determine the circumstances of the tragedy was entrusted to the Païta gendarmerie brigade.
