The 29-year-old American defeated Belarusian defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s singles final in sets of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

Keys is the first woman since compatriot Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat the WTA’s top two players on court in Melbourne, eliminating Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Madison Keys was playing in her second major final after being runner-up at the US Open in 2017.

She therefore slowed Sabalenka in her quest for a third consecutive title at the Australian Open, a feat last accomplished by Swiss Martina Hingis from 1997 to 1999.

The men’s final of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday and will pit defending champion Jannik Sinner (no. 1) against Alexander Zverev (no. 2).
