In the wake of the crusade led for several weeks by the French extreme right against Algeria, the European Parliament voted on Thursday a resolution, by a large majority, demanding the “immediate and without conditions” of “of The écrivain boualem cansal.
Initiated by elected officials of five parliamentary groups on the eight component of the European Parliament, the resolution, adopted by 533 votes for, 24 against and 48 abstentions, “condemns the arrest and detention of Boualem Sansal and claims its immediate and unconditional release” .
The European Parliament demands the release of Boualem Sansal
Order in mid-November at Algiers airport, Boualem Sansal is continued on the basis of article 87 bis of the penal code after remarks that the Moroccan territory was truncated by French colonialism for the benefit of Algeria.
The resolution of the European Parliament thus requires the revision of this article as well as the “repressive laws restricting freedoms”.
Also condemning the “arrests of all other activists, political prisoners, journalists, human rights defenders and other persons detained or condemned for exercising their right to freedom of opinion and expression”, the resolution maintains that “Future funds of the European Union should all take into account the progress made” in respect of the rule of law and freedom of expression.
A rhetoric that hardly hides the wish of the initiators of the resolution to exert additional pressure on the Algerian authorities after that of the French extreme right.
If Algiers has not yet officially reacted, parties like RND have condemned what they describe as “blatant interference in the internal affairs of Algeria and a violation of its sovereignty and its judicial independence” .
In a press release, the RND believes that Algerian justice is the “only body empowered to examine the files of Algerian citizens, and no foreign party, including the European Parliament, has the right to interfere in these cases”.
The FLN and El Bina also denounced the resolution of the European Parliament on the Sansal case.
In France, this resolution caused a large controversy, especially after the vote against elected officials of France rebellious in the European Parliament.
-Known for its positions, especially during the Palestinian conflict, the MEP LFI Rima Hassan suffered a fed fire from the extreme right, especially on the part of the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau who on the front line in the management of the crisis between France and Algeria.
France Crisis – Algeria: Rima Hassan Critique Boualem Sansal
“By voting against the resolution for the release of Boualem Sansal which also provided for a medical mission to assess his state of health, Rima Hassan sank into unworthiness,” wrote Bruno Retailleau on X.
Faced with this lifting of shields, Rima Hassan was quick to react by denouncing the instrumentalization of this Boualem Sansal affair, a man, she says, “in facts which dangerously defends the extreme-right identity theses , takes up the rhetoric of the great replacement or even stigmatizes exiled people ”.
“The text in question was put to the agenda by a coalition of the right and the far right, it was notably signed by Marion Le Pen,” she wrote on X.
“The instrumentalization of the case of Sansal for ends of interference and diplomatic climbing with a country neighboring the EU is coarse: for example of the amendments have been filed to introduce the question of Algerian immigration, the case Algerian influencers or the questioning of the EU-Algeria agreement, ”she adds.
As if to drive the point home, Rima Hassan Recalls that “those who cry out in scandal also refuse to adopt for months a resolution on the genocide in Gaza, the situation in the DRC or even on the ethnic cleaning in progress in Sudan”.
In a context where the tension between Algiers and Paris is starting to fade, this resolution is likely to revive the climbing again, sought and fed by an extremely revancharde extreme right and which sees in Algeria the perfect scapegoat of Franco problems -French.
But it is unlikely that Algiers who has always hammered his refusal of “any interference” gives in to the desiratas of this political current.
