Amazon will close its warehouses in Quebec: here’s what to know

Amazon is about to cease its activities in Quebec, according to information reported by several media. In total, seven warehouses, including those in and the Montreal delivery center, will soon close their doors, affecting nearly 1,800 employees.

The announcement was made this Wednesday, January 22 to the American giant’s delivery partners, according to -. The recent unionization of the workforce at the Laval warehouse would not be unrelated to this decision. Moreover, this could be effective by the end of March.

This restructuring could have repercussions on the speed of deliveries, while the delivery of packages will have to be reorganized.

The Confederation of National Unions (CSN) for its part denounced the “wild closures” of Amazon in Quebec. “This decision makes no sense,” said the president of the CSN, Caroline Senneville, in a press release. “Neither on a business level, nor on an operational level. Amazon, one of the best integrated companies between the click of a mouse and home delivery, would entrust all of its warehousing and distribution operations throughout Quebec to a third party? There are limits to taking ourselves for suitcases. It’s the complete opposite of the model developed by Amazon,” she added.

The latter takes the opportunity to recall that the only officially accredited union in Canada is located in Quebec (in Laval). “There is no doubt that the closures announced today are part of an anti-union campaign waged against the CSN and against Amazon employees,” continues Ms. Senneville.

Narcity Quebec has also contacted Amazon for more details. This article will be updated as soon as a response is received from them.

Called to react to this decision this morning, Prime Minister François Legault gave a response that was disconcerting to say the least.

“One, the Canadians won again. Two, I didn’t drink my orange juice this morning,” the Prime Minister responded to a question from a journalist.

More details will follow.
