Viktor Orban criticizes “hostile and aggressive” statements from Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, after an interview with his Slovak counterpart, the nationalist Robert Fico, denounced Tuesday statements “hostile and aggressive” of Ukraine, which decided to interrupt the transit of Russian gas to Central Europe. “The way the Ukrainians have refused to resolve this issue in a negotiated manner is simply unacceptable”said Mr. Orban, one of the closest partners within the European Union of the American presidents, Donald Trump, and Russian presidents, Vladimir Putin.

“The changes taking place in the world are working against kyiv and weakening its position. If she remains aggressive and hostile, she will lose.”warned Victor Orban, who spoke the day after Donald Trump’s return to the White House. “We will eventually get angry and take countermeasures”he added, without saying which ones.

With the return of Mr. Trump to the presidency of the United States, his position “pro-peace” became the « courant dominant » in the Western world, said the Hungarian leader, who has repeatedly called for peace talks between kyiv and Moscow and refused to send military aid to Ukraine. Mr. Orban once again said he was hostile to Ukraine’s membership in NATO, insisting that it “will never enjoy unanimous support” within the alliance.

Mr. Fico, who ended military aid to Ukraine when he took over from a center-right government in October 2023, is also opposed to kyiv’s membership in the Atlantic Alliance, “a big risk” which could, according to the Slovak Prime Minister, “lead to a third world war”.
