The Ottawa Senators left Madison Square Garden empty-handed on Tuesday night, losing 5-0 to the New York Rangers.

As we headed into a scoreless first period, the Rangers opened the scoring with just 2:28 left in the first period. The Senators immediately contested the decision, claiming that there had been offside on the sequence. After a quick review, the decision was overturned and the goal annulled.

A minute later, Rangers scored again, but this time it was indeed 1-0. With 1:12 left in the period, Alexis Lafrenière scored his 13th goal of the season to open the scoring.

The Senators were unable to tie the game in the final minute of the first period, returning to the locker room with a 1-0 deficit.

The Rangers doubled their lead just 1:48 into the second when Arthur Kaliyev scored his second goal of the season.

Kaliyev struck again with his second goal of the game at 5:31, but the Senators once again called it offside. As was the case the first time, the challenge was successful, the goal was disallowed and the score was 2-0 for New York.

After this play, the Senators made a goalie change and Anton Forsberg was thrown into the fray.

The Senators were unable to score the rest of the second period, returning to the locker room for the intermission trailing by two goals.

At 3:32 of the third period, forward Matt Rempe scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-0 for the Rangers.

New York took advantage of a five-on-three power play to score at 9:01 of the third period, extending their lead to 4-0. This goal was that of Artemi Panarin, his 20th of the season.

Just 56 seconds later, Will Cuylle scored his 13th goal of the season, making it 5-0.

The last half of the third period was unsuccessful for the Senators, unable to buy a goal and spoil Igor Shesterkin’s shutout. After this defeat in the Big Apple, the Senators will travel to Boston to face the Bruins on Thursday evening starting at 7 p.m. (ET).
