Melbourne, Australia, January 21: In a thrilling clash at the Australian Open 2025, German tennis player Alexander Zverev secured his place in the semi-finals after a hard-fought victory over American Tommy Paul, winning the match with a score of 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1.
Zverev’s triumph not only distinguishes him as the first semi-finalist of the tournament, but also lays the foundation for an exciting clash against the winner of the upcoming match between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
This marks Zverev’s third appearance in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam and his second at the Australian Open, where he previously reached the semifinals in 2023.
After the match, Zverev, as a charitable sportsman, praised his opponent, recognizing that Tommy Paul had played very well throughout the match. “To be honest, I should have been down two sets to zero. He played better than me. I wasn’t playing very well and I thought he was. I somehow Another won the first set, won the second set, and suddenly I find myself down two sets to zero, only needing one more set,” Zverev mused.

He added: “The fourth set was definitely the best I’ve played and I’m obviously extremely happy to be back in the semi-final now.” Zverev showed remarkable resilience, especially in the fourth set, which he dominated with a score of 6-1.
Tommy Paul put up a valiant fight, especially in the first two sets, but in the end, it was Zverev’s experience and talent that made the difference. Earlier in the tournament, Zverev had already demonstrated his prowess by extending his remarkable streak against left-handed opponents to 26 consecutive victories, including a decisive victory over Ugo Humbert in the previous round with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6 -3, 6-2. Zverev, currently ranked world number 2, continues his quest for this coveted first Grand Slam title.
