Italian Jannik Sinner, defending champion, qualifies for the quarter-finals

The ninth day of the Australian Open, Monday January 20, did not deliver any big surprises in the men’s draw: the world number one, the Italian Jannik Sinner, validated his ticket for the quarter-finals of the tournament , while his compatriot, Lorenzo Sonego put an end to the great adventure of the young American, Learner Tien, 19 years old. Among the women, the Polish Iga Swiatek is expected on the court in the evening.

The world number one won in four sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2) against Holger Rune, at the end of a disjointed meeting marked by the latter’s numerous unforced errors. The 21-year-old Dane, seeded number thirteen, showed his limits on the tactical level. In addition, the match was interrupted for almost 45 minutes in total: when Jannik Sinner suffered tremors at the start of the third set, requiring the intervention of a physiotherapist; then when the clip that connects the center of the net to the ground broke. It was the fifth face-to-face between the two players, the Italian now leads by three victories to two against Holger Rune.

As in the previous round against the Brazilian Joao Fonseca (19 years old, 112e), the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (29 years, 55e) spoke about his experience against the young American Learner Tien (19 years old, 121e), from the qualifications. The Californian was beaten in four sets (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1). His eldest qualified for the first time in his career for the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. He will meet the winner of the duel between Gaël Monfils and the American Ben Shelton (seeded number twenty). Learner Tien, who defeated world number five Daniil Medvedev in the second round, appeared to suffer hip pain late in the match.

In the women’s draw, American Madison Keys (seeded number 19) beat Kazakh Elena Rybakina (seeded number six) in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-3). Furthermore, the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (seeded number 28) easily defeated the Russian Veronika Kudermetova: 6-4, 6-1. As since the start of the large-scale invasion of her country by Kremlin troops at the end of February 2022, the two players did not pose together for the official photo at the start of the game and did not shake hands at the end of the match. This is the first time that the native of Odessa has won against the Muscovite, in three clashes.
