In a crazy match, the Montreal Canadiens won 5-4 in overtime against the New York Rangers on Sunday at the Bell Centre.
It was Patrik Laine who scored the winning goal in the extra period after a superb goal from Kaiden Guhle.
The Canadian came up against goaltender Jonathan Quick numerous times, who was looking for a 400th career victory in the National Hockey League (NHL). The American finished his evening of work with 33 saves, including several spectacular ones.
Four times the Rangers took the lead, thanks to Alexis Lafrenière, Will Cuylle, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. However, the Habs never gave up and constantly responded to the successes of their opponents.
Brendan Gallagher, Christian Dvorak, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky also lit the red light for the local favorites.
Lane Hutson picked up a point for an eighth straight game on Slafkovsky’s goal, and now has 38 points in 46 games this season.
With this victory, the Canadian moves within one point of the eighth and final place giving access to the playoffs, held by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Dobes a little more difficult, but impressive in overtime
Without having had a bad game, Habs rookie goalie Jakub Dobes seemed more shaky in front of his net, allowing four goals on 27 shots. However, he was excellent in overtime, making two spectacular saves.
He is still undefeated in five matches in the Bettman circuit.
Shy beginnings for Beck
Recalled from the Laval Rocket earlier in the day, forward Owen Beck played his second NHL game against the Rangers. Playing on his team’s fourth line alongside Joel Armia and Jake Evans, CH’s second-round pick in 2022 finished his work evening with a playing time of 8 mins 13 s in 11 appearances.
The Canadian will be back in action on Tuesday when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit Montreal.
