Patrik Laine played the hero in overtime and the Montreal team won 5-4.

Laine scored at 3:20 of the overtime period, on a nice pass from Kaiden Guhle.

On Saturday, the Habs blew a three-goal lead and lost 7-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The players of the Montreal club hoped to redeem themselves quickly.

They erased four one-goal deficits against the Rangers, then Laine sent the fans home with joy after a spectacular victory.

Brendan Gallagher and Christian Dvorak each had a goal and an assist, while Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky also scored for the Canadian (23-19-4). Jakub Dobes stopped 23 shots in his first NHL home start.

Alexis Lafrenière, Chris Kreider, Will Cuylle and Mika Zibanejad shook things up for the Rangers (22-20-4). Adam Fox had two assists and Jonathan Quick made 33 saves.

Before the match, the Canadian recalled forward Owen Beck from the Rocket. Beck replaced Michael Pezzetta in the lineup against the Rangers.

The Canadian will play their next game on Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Bell Centre.

Action and more action

Lafrenière started the hostilities after 11:17 of play. K’Andre Miller’s shot missed the target, but Lafrenière took advantage of a favorable jump from the boards to surprise Dobes. The Rangers were also helped down the stretch by the fact that the Canadian only had four skaters on the ice due to a mix-up on the bench.

The Habs responded at 1:52 p.m. Gallagher deflected a Dvorak shot into the goal, moments after Josh Anderson intercepted a Rangers clearance.

Cuylle gave the Rangers the lead again 46 seconds later. He intercepted a punt from Arber Xhekaj, then beat Dobes on the glove side.

The Canadian threatened late in the first period, but defenders Miller and Urho Vaakanainen came to Quick’s rescue by twice stopping pucks behind him.

The second period was first marked by an expected clash between Xhekaj and Matt Rempe. The tough Canadian had the advantage in a violent fight.

The two teams then exchanged blows.

Dvorak was lucky at 5:07, when his shot deflected off the blade of Filip Chytil’s stick before surprising Quick.

Zibanejad gave the Rangers the lead again at 10:24, on the power play. He surprised Dobes on the shield side with a counter-current shot. Kreider was installed in front of the Habs goalkeeper.

Suzuki tied the game again at 15:05. He intercepted a pass from defenseman Will Borgen in Rangers territory, then beat Quick on the glove side.

The Rangers returned to the locker room with the lead again, thanks to Kreider. Forgotten in front of the net, the power forward only had to deflect a pass from Fox behind the goal line.

The Canadian put a lot of pressure on the Rangers after the intermission. Quick held down the fort with some nice saves.

Quick was also saved by Borgen, who blocked Laine’s shot toward an abandoned cage.

At the other end of the ice, the Rangers wasted opportunities to widen the gap. Vaakanainen and Chytil reached the post to the right of Dobes on excessive attacks.

The Canadian’s efforts were rewarded with 7:08 remaining. Slafkovsky tied the game 4-4 by scoring on a putback from Cole Caufield.

Laine finally decided in overtime. Dobes also had his say, with two spectacular saves against Vincent Trocheck.
