in disagreement, far-right party leaves Israel’s ruling coalition

The start of a political crisis? The Jewish Force party, of far-right Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, announced on Sunday January 19 that it was leaving the ruling coalition due to a disagreement with the current Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, over the truce agreement he described as “scandalous”, with Hamas.

“Following the approval of the scandalous deal with the terrorist group Hamas […] THE [trois] ministers of the Jewish Force party recently presented their letters of resignation” and “the Jewish Force party is no longer a member of the coalition”, indicates a press release from the party of Itamar Ben Gvir, who was Minister of National Security.

This announcement does not bring down the government, which still benefits from a narrow majority in Parliament.

“Disastrous”

On Thursday, Ben Gvir indicated that he would resign from the government if it adopted the “irresponsible” truce agreement with Hamas, without leaving the coalition around Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“If this irresponsible agreement is approved and implemented, the Jewish Force party will no longer be part of the government,” Itamar Ben Gvir said at a press conference in Jerusalem.

Nevertheless, “Jewish force under my leadership will not overthrow Netanyahu and will not act with the left (…) against the government,” he added.

“For the release of the hostages, it is necessary to completely stop the humanitarian aid sent to Gaza,” he affirmed: “Only on this condition, Hamas will release our hostages without endangering the security of Israel.”

On X Friday, the former minister considered it “disastrous” to release “hundreds of terrorists who have blood on their hands” and will return “to the north of the Gaza Strip with weapons.”
