(Cortina d’Ampezzo) The Italian Federica Brignone brilliantly increased her lead in the general classification of the Alpine Ski World Cup on Sunday by dominating the super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy).
Posted at 8:08 a.m.
Brignone, 34, relegated the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and Corinne Suter, respectively to 58 hundredths and 1.08 seconds, while the American Lindsey Vonn, back on the circuit at 40 after six years of retirement, fell, without gravity.
Brignone, already the oldest World Cup winner, won her 31ste victory, his fourth of the winter in a third discipline after the giant (Sölden and Semmering) and the downhill (Sankt Anton).
The Valdotaine consolidated her status as the most successful Italian skier in history on the world circuit, the day after the victory of her compatriot Sofia Goggia in downhill on the same track of the “Olimpia delle Tofane” which will host in a year the women’s alpine skiing events at the 2026 Games.
Goggia missed her start and was mishandled by “Tofane” to finish 7e1.25 seconds from her compatriot and great rival.
-Only 20e of the descent the day before, Vonn, back on the circuit with a knee replaced by a titanium prosthesis, was this time in the mix and could aim for her first podium since March 2018, but she made a mistake and fell, before quickly getting up.
Her highly anticipated reunion with Cortina where she won 12 times did not keep their promises. She now has an appointment in Germany in Garmisch-Partenkirchen next weekend for a downhill and a super-G.
In the general classification of the World Cup, Brignone now has more than 100 points ahead of the Swiss Camille Rast who is not participating in the speed events.
They will come face to face on Tuesday at Kronplatz, still in Italy, for a giant slalom.
