The legend of “utes” (combining the front of a classic car with the rear of a pick-up) began in 1932, in Australia, with a letter from a farmer’s wife who requested a car to go to mass on Sunday and to take the pigs to the market on Monday. Ford marketed its ute in 1934. This body, very popular there, made its debut in North America with the Studebaker Coupe Express of 1937. But it was really the Ford Ranchero, launched in 1957, and the Chevrolet El Camino, launched in 1959, who popularized it.

The Ranchero will be introduced on a full-size chassis basis before moving to a compact format in 1960 then intermediate in 1966 until its disappearance at the end of the 1979 vintage, after 7 generations.
