The media library du Tréport (Seine-Maritime) has just launched the second edition of are Great price for small steps. The principle: Leave children under 3 years old vote for their favorite bookwith the help of a parent.
The librarians selected four albums this year (see box). These can be borrowed together for a period of two weeks. “The goal is to read the books several times without changing a word and note the child’s reactions, to then vote for their favorite book,” explains librarian Alison Flandre.
The Grand Prix des petits pas showed all its interest during the first edition in 2024. Many parents were surprised by their child’s choice, proof that the albums which find their audience are not necessarily those we think.
The selected books
> The magic carousel by Jeanne Boyer (editions École des Loisirs): an album in the form of a carousel where you follow the cat Miko on a plane, on the back of a cheetah or even an album.
> The polyglot rooster by Marie-Darme Rizzo (Hélium editions). Children will discover the rooster’s cry according to countries and languages.
> The lion in the book by Daniel Chaperon (editions 400 coups). A huge feline decided to take a nap in the book. The child will think about how he could move the lion.
> Mojo seeks a hiding place by Adèle Verlinden (editions les Fourmis Rouges). Mojo is tired and he is looking for a perfect place where he can rest but everywhere he goes he is disturbed.
During the 1st edition, it is the book The Barrette by Annelise Heurtier who won the prize. “We had around sixty children who took part in the vote, we were very happy. This second edition is awaited by some parents, it’s a good sign” continues Alison Flandre. They and their colleagues will also offer community reading sessions, particularly for children at the Tréport crèche.
To participate in the prize, all you need to do is be registered in one of the Sister Cities network libraries and borrow the set of four albums from Le Tréport. Voting closes on June 14.
