Israel-Hamas deal must come into force

The long-awaited truce negotiated between Israel and Hamas is due to come into force at 7:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. local time) this Sunday morning. But a delay is possible, with Israel claiming not to have received the list of hostages.

Under the terms of the agreement, hostilities must cease and 33 Israeli hostages must be released, in a first phase spread over six weeks. In exchange, Israel will release 737 Palestinian prisoners, according to the Israeli Ministry of Justice, with Egypt reporting “more than 1,890 Palestinian prisoners” to be released during this first phase.

The war is not over, says Netanyahu

“This is a temporary ceasefire” and “we retain the right to resume the war if necessary and with the support of the United States,” Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday in a televised speech, promising to bring back “all the hostages”. If necessary, “we will do it with more force,” warned the Israeli Prime Minister.
