A ninth-grade student at Cabrillo High School has died after suffering a “medical emergency” during a football game, the Long Beach Unified School District announced Friday evening on X.

In a post on Instagram, the school football team’s official account announced the student’s death, saying it was “the hardest post we’ve ever had to post.”
“Forever and ever we will hold Brian in our hearts,” the message read.
The team is inviting people, including alumni of the football program, to participate in a vigil Saturday morning at 9 a.m. According to the message, people can gather near the “C” shaped statue in the Willard Street traffic circle, west of Santa Fe Avenue. The group will then walk to the football field to place flowers and candles.
LBUSD officials said they were “dejected” to share the news of this student’s death, adding that their “hearts are with the student’s family and the entire community.”
