A sudden disappearance puts the Principality of Monaco in a state of astonishment. We learned this Friday, January 17, of the death of Minister of State Didier Guillaume.
Didier Guillaume was 65 years old. The terrible news of his disappearance fell a week after the announcement of his planned hospitalization for medical treatment. After a long political career in France, he officially succeeded Pierre Dartout as head of the princely government on September 3.
In a press release, HSH Prince Albert II expressed his immense sadness. The Sovereign sends his condolences to his wife, his family and all his loved ones. He salutes the remarkable commitment of Didier Guillaume who knew, I quote, “demonstrate all its determination and know-how in order to make concrete progress on essential subjects for the future of Monaco”.
Multiple tributes
The members of the Princely Government and all the staff of the Administration, “ will remember her exceptional capacity for work, her passion for politics in favor of women and men, as well as her spirit of unity and mobilization. Beyond being a statesman, his immense human qualities allowed him to quickly be appreciated in Monaco« .
Same feeling of sadness in the National Council. President Thomas Brezzo and elected officials welcome “ the memory of a devoted man who listened to the representatives of the Monegasques« .
For their part, Mayor George Marsan and members of the Municipal Council say they have measured “ the importance of his commitment to the Principality and appreciate his great human qualities« .
-The reactions are numerous, too, in France where Didier Guillaume held high positions. The former socialist senator was notably Minister of Agriculture from 2018 to 2020. It was under Edouard Philippe.
For the current Prime Minister, François Bayrou, he was “a strong and generous man. A humanist in the full sense of the word”.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, Charles Ange Ginesy, president of the Department, says he is very affected. He greets “ a lover of the territories“. The Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes Hugues Moutouh pays tribute to “ a courageous and benevolent man, inhabited in his successive functions, by the sense of the exercise of the State and the general interest« .
Finally Dominique Estrosi-Sassone, Senator and President of the France-Monaco friendship group in the Senate, believes that Didier Guillaume had taken up his duties as Minister of State with enthusiasm and dedication, showing in a few months all his determination and ability to take on the essential files and projects.
