The City of Brest announced last September the broadcast of two Champions League football matches from Stade Brestois 29 in Fan Zone format. Thus, the meeting between the Brestois and FC Barcelona, Tuesday November 26, 2024, was watched by thousands of supporters at Brest expo park in Penfeld.
The Ti-Zefs match against Real Madrid was to be broadcast at the Brest Arena on Wednesday January 29, 2025. This will not be the case.
Refusal of Canal +
“Following numerous requests by email and telephone exchanges, and an official letter dated December 13, 2024 from François Cuillandre, mayor of Brest, to the governing bodies of UEFA, the only ones authorized to examine this request, an official response was received today stating that UEFA will not grant the possibility of organizing new fan zones due to its contractual obligations with its commercial partners, in particular the broadcaster holding the national retransmission rights.
Indeed, it was indicated by UEFA in its letter that “Canal Plus has confirmed its position to limit this agreement [de diffusion] only one match for this season in view of the impact that this type of broadcast has on the economic model of their exclusive rights,” indicates the City of Brest in a press release.
A decision that the mayor, François Cuillandre, deplores: “I regret that the exceptional route of the SB29 cannot be shared by a larger number of spectators in a friendly, festive and secure setting such as this fan zone allowed. »
