Club Brugge faced Genk in the semi-final of the Belgian Cup. Everything remains open for the return match.
Unlike the previous rounds, these semi-finals are played to the best of two sets. This evening, Club Brugge opened the ball by welcoming Genk. A more than promising display between the two best current teams in the country.
The format of this double confrontation did not encourage the two teams to get off to a flying start more than was right, despite some timid possibilities to start. The first real opportunity worthy of the name, however, ended at the bottom.
Shortly before the half hour mark, Three Arokodares appeared behind Joel Ordonez to take a magnificent cross from Jarne Steuckers and throw a chill on the Jan Breydelstadion (0-1).
Surprised with the opening goal, Ordonez recovered by equalizing from a corner five minutes later. An equalization which infuriated the Limburgers. The VAR has long checked the potential obstruction of Maxim De Cuyper on goalkeeper Mike Penders but ultimately did not call Lawrence Visser to review the phase (1-1).
Genk frustrated a second time
In the second half, the Blauw en Zwart had several opportunities to reverse the situation but showed clumsiness in the last move. And it was finally following a new refereeing controversy that the 2-1 occurred.
On a center at ground level, Ferran Jutgla passed his defender and collapsed in the rectangle after his intervention. This time the referee was called by VAR. After long hesitation, he sanctioned the intervention of the Limburg defender with a penalty. Christos Tzolis was quick to put Bruges in charge.
Genk then added offensive weight to come back, which led to a few hot situations…in vain. The Club won 2-1, everything remains open for the return match. But for now, Racing leaves above all with a feeling of injustice.
