A five-year-old child suffering from the flu arrived in critical condition at Wolfson Hospital Wednesday and died shortly after admission, the hospital said.

The child was intubated and his pulse had stopped when he arrived at the hospital. A spokesperson said doctors “did not have time to diagnose and treat him.”

“We are at the beginning of the peak of the disease wave, and the burden is expected to increase in the coming weeks. It is not yet too late to get vaccinated and to prevent serious illnesses,” said Professor Yasmin Maor, head of the infectious diseases unit at Wolfson Hospital.

In Beilinson, four women, ages 22 to 50, are hospitalized in the general intensive care unit in critical condition due to flu-related complications.

All four were placed under sedation and on a respirator.

The Health Ministry said the number of patients diagnosed with respiratory illnesses was increasing, including 250 new cases of influenza and 191 new cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common illness that affects the lungs.

The rate of consultations in internal and pediatric emergency rooms due to pneumonia has increased, but the number of consultations for bronchiolitis in infants under two years of age remains unchanged. This common lung infection affects babies and children under two years old. It is usually mild and can be treated at home, but it can also be serious. This condition is more common in winter.

The Ministry of Health strongly recommends getting a flu vaccine and practicing good hygiene, as respiratory illnesses spread easily.
