In recent months, Belgium has experienced disappointing results and quite a few of Domenico Tedesco’s choices have been called into question.
There is one that seemed to reach consensus and yet, when we see how things are going in the championship, we are entitled to ask questions. Because if Koen Casteels was not unworthy, Matz Sels is having an exceptional season.
An exceptional season
He surprised everyone last summer by deciding at the last moment to join Nottingham Forest. We certainly did not imagine that the club would be second in the standings, six points behind Liverpool.
Results to which Sels is far from stranger, he who has a string of very big meetings. This was the case again in Tuesday’s summit match against the Reds. While he came under heavy fire from Liverpool seeking to erase the one-goal deficit, he released six of the balls that came in his direction.
-Starter with the Devils?
With nine clean sheets in twenty-one Premier League matches, Sels is leading the Golden Glove at the moment. He therefore justifies his transfer to England and is perhaps gaining a starting place in the national team.
Playing in the best championship in the world while Casteels is in Saudi Arabia, Sels has a good chance of getting more playing time with the Red Devils but all this will obviously depend on the name of the coach for the next matches. Belgium has Nations League playoffs to play in March to stay in League A.
