Twelve people were killed and more than 100 injured in the explosion of tanks at a domestic gas distribution station in central Yemen’s Houthi-controlled Al-Bayda province, state media reported on Sunday. AFP two local officials.
“Twelve local residents lost their lives and more than 100 were injured” in Saturday’s explosion in Al-Zaher district, said Aref al-Ghamri, Al-Bayda media manager.
Another local official specified that “the explosion occurred while customers were on site”, adding that the station was located in a very busy market, which would explain, according to him, the “heavy toll”.
Videos circulating on social media show flames ravaging dozens of cars around the gas station. The authenticity of these images could not be verified by AFP.
The explosion, whose origin remains unknown, took place in an area considered a front line between the Houthis and government forces, the scene of sporadic clashes between the two rival camps.
