Firefighters have been battling a violent forest fire since Tuesday in an upscale neighborhood overlooking Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades.

Two other fires are affecting the California megalopolis, including another near Pasadena, to the north of the city.

Several published maps make it possible to see live the extent of the damage and the progression of these fires.

Concern is palpable in Los Angeles County, affected by unprecedented fires. “This is expected to be the strongest wind event in this region since 2011”warns Daniel Swain, a meteorologist, to AFP. Firefighters continue to fight this Wednesday against a violent forest fire in an upscale neighborhood populated with villas in the mountains northwest of Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades. This fire, now called the Palisades Firewas declared late Tuesday morning in this neighborhood. Panicked residents had to abandon their vehicles, fleeing on foot from the fire which has already ravaged nearly 2,900 hectares this Tuesday at 4 p.m. French time.

Several maps published by authorities or media show the extent of the damage and the progression of this fire and several others which encircle the sprawling megalopolis of Los Angeles, regularly threatened by fires in recent years. These include the map published (new window) by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). The daily menu Los Angeles Times (new window) also mentions the sectors affected by the fires and the number of hectares burned. The Californian media Fox10Phoenix has put a webcam online (new window) showing the fire in the city of Pasadena.

Two more fires

Firefighters must fight on several other fronts. Tuesday evening, a new fire, named Eaton Firethis time occurred near the city of Pasadena, north of Los Angeles. More than 2,200 hectares have already burned in this fire this Tuesday at 4 p.m. French time. Firefighters then indicated that a third fire, called Hurst Firebroke out in the Sylmar neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, northwest of Los Angeles. The fire, which has already ravaged 500 hectares, led to the evacuation of some nearby residents.

At least two people died and “many” Others were seriously injured in the fires in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone told reporters Wednesday. In addition, 1,000 buildings have (so far) been destroyed in one of the fires in Los Angeles, according to authorities.
