Samsung produces the most mobile devices of any manufacturer, although it has significantly reduced its annual production in recent years. The company also maintains most of its devices with regular software updates.
Here’s what we know
More than 130 Galaxy smartphones and tablets receive new updates monthly, quarterly and semi-annually, depending on their price and age. However, all devices stop receiving updates after a few years. Starting this month, Samsung will stop releasing software updates for three models: Galaxy A02s, Galaxy A12 and W21 5G.
The W21 5G is the Chinese variant of the Galaxy Fold 2, whose updates ceased in other regions in October 2024. All three models were released in late 2020 or early 2021 and received four years of support.
As the flagship, the W21 5G received three major Android updates, while the more budget-friendly Galaxy A02s and A12 received two each. Both models run Android 12 with One UI 4.1.
The move allows Samsung to focus on supporting newer devices while providing them with better features and security. If you use one of these models, you should consider upgrading to a modern device that will have longer software support.
On January 22, Samsung Electronics will hold an Unpacked presentation in San Jose at 20:00 Ukrainian time, during which it will present the new Galaxy S25 series of smartphones.
