General manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel both had conversations with Hill on Monday, 24 hours after the star receiver indicated he wanted to leave Miami following the loss to the New York Jets , a setback that confirmed the team’s exclusion from the playoffs.
Grier said Hill recanted his statement. On Sunday, he said he loved playing in Miami, but he had to do what was best for his career.
“He never asked me to trade him,” Grier added during the team’s report on Tuesday.
“We are having productive conversations,” assured Grier. I’ll keep them between us. The only thing I will say is that in a frustrating season, he was very emotional after the game. We had our chances to qualify despite our 2-6 record and all this while he personally played through a wrist injury. It was the last straw. »
Hill only caught two passes for 20 yards in this game. He decided not to play the fourth quarter and McDaniel told him that was unacceptable during their hour-long conversation Monday.
McDaniel assured that his relationship with Hill is good, but that the two need to “burst the abscess.”
“We discussed several subjects frankly, […] including that it was unacceptable for him to leave a meeting of his own accord and would not be acceptable in the future, McDaniel said. For his part, he accepts responsibility. I wouldn’t say there was anything to fix, but we needed to clear the air quickly following this tumultuous situation. »
