Justice takes its course in the case linked to the deaths of the brothers Johnny et Matthew Gaudreau.

We learn today through Columbus Dispatch what Sean Higginsthe driver responsible for the collision which caused the death of the two cyclists, refused a reduced sentence in exchange for a guilty plea.

The crown offered him a 35-year prison sentence for his crime if he agreed to plead guilty. The man, however, refused and will have to stand trial. He now faces a 30-year prison sentence for the deaths of each of the Gaudreau brothers.

Remember that he was formally criminally charged a few weeks ago.

Here are the four charges against him.

  • Dangerous driving causing death (Second degree)
  • Manslaughter (First degree)
  • Alteration of physical evidence (Fourth degree)
  • Having left the scene of a fatal accident (Second degree)

Higgins, whose blood alcohol level of 0.87 exceeded the New Jersey state limit of 0.8, will be required to appear in court on February 4 to stand trial. He will remain behind bars until then.

More details will follow.
