Ready for some snow? Friday is a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – January is just beginning and winter weather is in full swing as an arctic air mass grips the Mid-South this week.

This will keep the area in a cold climate throughout the week and into the early weekend before a slow warm-up begins. Add in a winter storm system that will bring snow late in the week, making Friday a First alert weather day.

A low pressure system will develop along the Gulf Coast later this week, pushing Gulf moisture north and into the south-central where it will intersect with cold air at the surface, making a perfect setup for snow Friday.

Current forecast models indicate snow could begin falling late Thursday evening, likely after midnight, and continue throughout the day Friday and into Friday evening. At this time, snow will be the main form of precipitation from start to finish.

There could be some sleet or a wintry mix along and south of Highway 278 in North Mississippi, but the vast majority of Action News 5’s coverage area will likely only get snow.

Snow bands could be heavy at times and lean more towards wet snow, which could potentially accumulate quickly.

Long-term future forecasts(Action News 5)

There are still some uncertainties about this system regarding the intensity and exact trajectory of the accompanying low pressure system, but the general consensus of all long-range forecast models is for snow.

It is still too early to determine exactly how much snow will fall and where the heaviest bands and highest amounts will be, but be aware that there will most likely be snow on the ground across the entire coverage area from Action News 5 by the end of the day Friday. and this will in turn cause travel problems in the region.
