The Mount Qomolangma tourist area was temporarily closed, and tourists and staff were safe after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook Dingri County, Xizang Autonomous Region, on Tuesday morning, according to Xinhua .
Dingri is home to the base camp of the world’s highest peak.
The hotel buildings and surrounding areas of the tourist zone remained intact, and tourists and staff are safe, according to the Dingri Culture and Tourism Bureau.
The Qomolangma Station for Atmospheric and Environmental Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, located in Dingri, suffered a power outage. However, the facilities remained in good condition.
-Located on the border between China and Nepal, Mount Qomolangma peaks at an altitude of more than 8,840 m, its northern part being located in Xizang.
According to weather forecasts, the temperature in Dingri ranges from minus 18 degrees Celsius, to zero.
The Chinese side of Mount Qomolangma welcomed 13,764 foreign tourists in 2024, more than double the number recorded in 2023. This is a notable sign of the boom in international tourism following the relaxation of the policy China regarding visas.
According to the district Culture and Tourism Bureau, these tourists are mainly from countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Germany and France.
