“We have a computer program to track all of this: it is estimated that the lake has retained between 25,000 and 30,000 cubic meters in recent hours, confirmed Monday afternoon the Alderman of Works, Geoffroy Matagne. This is already substantial but completely manageable: the total capacity of the Paradis ITZ is around 80,000 m3.”
For the Brainois alderman, the devices have worked perfectly since Sunday and despite the abundance of rain, no damage has been observed downstream of the Paradis lake.
Several systems are installed on the site: a monk at the Hain allows a certain quantity of water to pass under the planks, while playing with the level of the river so that a sort of overflow flows into the lake. This is what caused the water level to rise quite a bit on Sunday and Monday morning, and gave a “coffee with milk” color to the wind-swept lake.
When the flood is very strong, the Hain can also flow into the lake by passing over the walking path at the lowest point of the site, but this was not the case on Monday afternoon.
“According to the information we receive, we reached the peak of the flood between noon and 2 p.m. this Monday, confirmed Geoffroy Matagne. The ZIT therefore played its role perfectly. The level of the Hain should gradually fall now.”
At the other end of the lake, another monk gradually releases the water into the river and reduces the level of the lake, once its role as a buffer has been ensured.
The mechanism is manual, and operated by the municipal works service, but the indications are given on the basis of information communicated by the Province, responsible for the management of Hain.
